Day-by-day

Day 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After registration at Marangu Gate, trek through lush montane rainforest alive with birdlife and blue monkeys to Mandara Hut. Hiking time: 4–5 hours. Overnight: Mandara Hut, 2,720 m (8,923 ft).

Day 2

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Leave the forest and cross open moorland with views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, passing giant heathers and lobelias. Hiking time: 6–7 hours. Overnight: Horombo Hut, 3,720 m (12,205 ft).

Day 3

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Cross the lunar alpine desert of 'the Saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut, the base for your summit attempt. Early dinner and rest. Hiking time: 6–7 hours. Overnight: Kibo Hut, 4,703 m (15,430 ft).

Day 4

Summit Day — Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Around midnight, begin the steep ascent over scree to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then along the rim to Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m (19,341 ft), for sunrise. Descend to Kibo Hut for a rest and lunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut. Hiking time: 12–15 hours.

Day 5

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

A long but gentle descent through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate before transferring to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Hiking time: 5–7 hours.

Day 6

Departure

Breakfast at your hotel followed by transfer to the airport or onward to your next Tanzanian adventure.
